Genealogy and family history are closely related but not identical. Genealogy focuses on documenting lineage, relationships, and historical records. Family history expands beyond names and dates to include traditions, culture, personal stories, and historical experiences.
A complete understanding of ancestry combines both approaches. Building a family tree provides structure, while storytelling gives life and personality to ancestors who might otherwise remain simple names on a chart.
The Hinchman Heritage Society has always embraced both dimensions. Our published volumes document genealogical lineages with meticulous sourcing, while our newsletter, community stories, and oral history collection bring those lineages to life through personal narrative. Members who contribute both genealogical data and family stories make the most lasting contributions.
When you write about your ancestors, go beyond vital statistics. Include their occupations, communities, neighbors, religious affiliations, and historical contexts. Even a brief paragraph of narrative transforms a dry genealogical entry into a living portrait. Future generations will treasure the stories far more than the dates.
